Why
Birds lose lactase activity as they mature. Milk causes loose droppings and digestive upset. Small amounts of plain yogurt or hard cheese are tolerated better than liquid milk.
What to watch for
Signs that the amount was too much:
- watery droppings
- crop discomfort
What to feed instead
If you were reaching for milk, papaya gives you the same job — a treat the bird will actually take — without the risk. Can parrots eat papaya?
How much is too much
Avoid liquid milk entirely. Small pieces of plain yogurt are acceptable occasionally.
Treats and fruit should stay under roughly 20% of the daily bowl. The rest is pellets, leafy greens and a good chop.
