Why

Hard cheese is lower in lactose than milk, so a pea-sized piece will not usually cause illness, but it delivers salt and saturated fat with almost no nutritional value.

What to watch for

Signs that the amount was too much:

  • none expected at a pea-sized amount
  • weight gain with regular feeding

What to feed instead

If you were reaching for cheese, egg gives you the same job — a treat the bird will actually take — without the risk. Can parrots eat egg?

How much is too much

At most a pea-sized piece, no more than once a week.

Treats and fruit should stay under roughly 20% of the daily bowl. The rest is pellets, leafy greens and a good chop.
