Can parrots eat spinach?
Caution
OK in rotation — not every day.
- Food
- Spinach
- Category
- Vegetable
- Verdict
- Only in small amounts
- Amount
- A couple of leaves, 2 times a week, mixed with other greens.
- Safer swap
- Kale
Why
Spinach is high in oxalates, which bind calcium and can contribute to hypocalcemia if it dominates the diet. It is nutritious, just not a daily staple.
What to watch for
Signs that the amount was too much:
- none in moderation
- calcium imbalance if fed daily
What to feed instead
If you were reaching for spinach, kale gives you the same job — a treat the bird will actually take — without the risk. Can parrots eat kale?
How much is too much
A couple of leaves, 2 times a week, mixed with other greens.
Treats and fruit should stay under roughly 20% of the daily bowl. The rest is pellets, leafy greens and a good chop.
